One thing that I’m always asked by clients who have never used social channels for business before is “What is Social Media?”.
The answer may be quite simple to many people, but I find myself amazed how many people working in online marketing and consultancy do not know the simple things, like what URL stands for, or how to link an image in a forum post.
You’ll be glad to now that this is an easily rectifiable problem in any company. The key is STAFF TRAINING!
It may be expensive in the beginning but in the long run you will save cash because your staff will have a better understanding of the web and it’s terminology, and therefore will work more efficiently.
Below I’ve listed a glossary of commonly used online terms and their definitions:
- URL – Uniform Resource Locator
- Social Media – People having conversations online
- Hyperlink – An element in an electronic document that links to another place/document (this should not be described as a clickable link)
- Web-Widget – A portable chunk of code that can be installed and executed within any separate HTML-based web page
- Hashtag – Hashtags are a community-driven convention for adding additional context and metadata to your tweets.
- Social Bookmarking – the practice of saving bookmarks (favourites) to a public web site so they can be accessed from any computer or shared with other people.
- Viral (Often described in a web context as something ‘going viral’) – Online content that gains widespread popularity through the process of Internet sharing, typically through email or Instant messaging, blogs and other media sharing websites. Viral content is often humorous in nature.
So there you have it! That’s the top seven, although I could list a lot more!
