This story was recently reported by TechCrunch. I’m a big fan of Mythbusters, and thought it deserved a mention here also.
Over the last month AT&T has been high up in Twitter’s trending ranks, occasionally popping up on the top trends list. This was mostly down to it’s performance (or lack of performance) at WWDC, and some issues that have been raised with connection.
Last Friday AT&T topped the trending search along with Michael Jackson and Farrah Faucett, this time it was because Mythbuster Adam Savage (@donttrythis on Twitter) along with a legion of over 65,000 followers began attacking AT&T because he was charged a whopping $11,000 for “a few hours of web surfing in Canada”.
AT&T claim that Savage downloaded 9 gigabytes while in Canada using his USB data connection (which he calls “frakking impossible“). The customer service rep Savage was dealt with then made the mistake of trying to pull the numbers gig on a man who gets the numbers right for a living. He told Savage that “data is charged at .015 cents, or a penny and a half, per kb”. There’s a very big mistake in the orders of magnitude difference there!
It just goes to show that when you have 65,000 followers moving towards a common goal you can get of a $11,000 bill (even if it was a mistake!).
The issue has been resolved according to this tweet sent by an official AT&T Twitter account!
